A Sacramento jury has convicted a woman with three prior drunken driving convictions of gross vehicular manslaughter in connection with a fatal crash in which she was impaired behind the wheel again.
The jury also found 34-year-old Rebecca Vela of Sacramento guilty Monday of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence.
Prosecutors say Vela rear-ended a motorcycle while changing lanes in Elk Grove in April 2009. The motorcycle lodged under Vela’s sedan before she swerved and crashed through a metal sound wall.
The driver, 54-year-old Stanley Spaeth Jr., was thrown from the bike and killed.
The Sacramento County District Attorney‘s office says Vela had previous DUI convictions from 1994, 1996 and 2000.
Vela’s lawyer has said she did not remember the accident.
